WordPress Boss Lady / Strategist at WordPress Barista

Chilliwack, BC. Canada

wpbarista.com

I work with Boss Ladies (primarily) to build kick-a$$ online empires. Strategy is the fun part. Science and skill takes care of the code.

Introduction
About Me

The highest praise I receive is from the initial meeting when clients realize what they don't know and that they are in good hands.

I take clients' business goals and dreams - create a plan - prioritize each portion - and execute the online portion when and how appropriate.

Currently celebrating 10 years as a WordPress developer. Each purchase supports Kiva, Red Cross Canada, World Vision. We select 2 charities per year to donate in kind.

Personally? I love my 3 girls, dog, cat, fish and birds, collectively, my zoo. I play piano poorly and paint while drinking. Oh, and wine.

Profile Questions
  • What do you like most about your profession?

The strategy - the vision-casting - the brainstorming - the plans - the systems and the excitement - THAT is my jam! I help Boss Ladies (& men) get a website and a PLAN that helps them get further ahead.

Don't know what your online marketing goals are?

That, my friends, is my specialty. I'm just a developer - so all the strategy and planning are all part of the package - and it happens to be what I'm really really good at.

  • What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

Q: "I'm not sure what I need." (It may not be a question but they expect an answer!) :)

A: No problem. Do you have a moment? Can you tell me about your business? What do you do? What are your services? I can help figure out your needs if I know what you're trying to do.

.... a while later: Who buys from you now? Are you wanting to change that or grow that audience? Tell me as much as you can about them? Male/female? Socio-economic? tech-savvy? location? Education? expectations?

Conclusion - we discover what she needs for her company - thereby clarifying the piece that the website will play. Or the client needs to process all this information. So I write a summary email to help put the details in a bullet list.

    Absolutely love this part!!

  • Describe a recent client engagement or project.

Working on a big redesign of a travel website. She has been a long-time client; I believe this is the third redesign we are doing with her. She is moving from a multisite to a single site focusing on her services and herself as the brand.

Each strategy session is invigorating! We discuss her likes and dislikes and then we step back and look at the mockup in entirety - and then review the goals - and then go back to the mockup with the goals in mind. It always produces an interesting result!!

This is definitely my favorite part of the project process.

  • What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Expertise of user interface, design and psychology.
    Good listening skills.
    Ability to Educate.

  • What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

Knowledge and understanding of user interface and psychology.

  • How are you different than others in your profession?

I don't just do the website the way you want it - I do it the way that will accomplish your goals.

In our strategy sessions, you will understand your marketing and specifically your online marketing goals and how we are going to accomplish them.

With your understanding of your culture and clientele and my understanding of user interface and design - you can truly have a website that WORKS for you!

  • What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

My business mentor, locally is a big influence, and online authorities in my niche. I read a lot of Copyblogger, Problogger, SocialTriggers, Marie Foleo, Chris Brogan, Social Media Examiner, and on and on. I am an avid book reader. I only read business or personal growth books. Avid to me, is one or two a month! lol I do go to WordCamps and conferences, but more for the networking. I dont find that I really get a lot from them.

  • How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

It is usually the result of miscommunication and different expectations. Listening to where they are coming and what they believe and understanding their stance, usually leads to a place where I can understand their needs and meet them.

  • Describe your proudest professional accomplishment.

I am definitely most proud of the feedback that I get from clients. When I have taken them from afraid of the unknown but necessary website to an educated consumer and manager of their own site, that is all sorts of warm fuzzies.

I also love to see my clients succeed - several long time clients started out marketing and blogging and now have been picked up by publishers and authored their own books - absolutely brilliant!
