How did you know you were an Entrepreneur?

Asked 9 months ago, Edited 4 weeks ago by in Business Consulting

Do you remember when you realized you were an entrepreneur? We published a book of witty and insightful one liners about just that. http://www.howdoyouknowifyouareanentrepreneur.com/. What was the defining moment when you knew? For me - when a 6am call interrupted my lunch!

I was 8 years old at my first yard sale experiencing dreadful sales (like any first time startup). So I stood in the middle of the road until people pulled to the side and bought something.

Blair Kirchner That is a great one Tod. Would you allow us to us it in the next volume of the book? (we are collecting third party entries for it) , of course we would attribute it to you. Blair Kirchner 9 months ago

By circumstance - literally when I realized that even though I was an employee in a large organization, I did many of the things a successful entrepreneur does. Once I was downsized, it was more like a transition to being a full-time business owner than starting a whole new attitude or business venture.

Blair Kirchner Great point Bob - i think a lot of people would echo that series of events. Blair Kirchner 9 months ago
Bob Turel Thanks for the quick comeback Blair. It was a revelation, and fortunately, a very positive one. It helps me now as I try to use those very same techniques, and also pass them along to those startups! Bob Turel 9 months ago

I knew that I was an entrepreneur when I was about 6 years old. My father was an entrepreneur and I loved watching him create, innovate and use his mind to earn a living. It was one of the most empowering experiences and journeys in my life. The proof for me was the example of a strong work ethic which my father displayed. My father had a 3rd grade education but he was able to take the skills he had and build several successful companies that generated enough money to buy our family a home and take care of a family of 4, food, clothing and other essentials. My father was an entrepreneur during the 1960's in Atlanta, Ga. during a time of segregation. My father had to overcome tremendous challenges to do what he did. This story is how and why I have come to be what and who I am. Because of my dad, I know and knew that I, too was/am an entrepreneur. Thanks for this question. It allowed me to pay homage to my deceased father, a father who provided a strong legacy.

Blair Kirchner Thanks for the answer Freda and a truly inspirational one! Our culture and the success of our country is built on the back or second and even third generation entrepreneurs who learned everything they know from their parent(s) endeavors and then pass it on to their children. It is important to step back and realize these defining moments. Blair Kirchner 9 months ago

As a young kid, I was always a leader: theater, swim team, student activities in school. And when I'd work for someone else and have to bend to "stupid" rules that were aimed at squelching creativity, I'd rebel. I still do!

So after getting marketing and sales skills (that are transferable to any business), I just knew I had to be on my own. Add video and online marketing and I was set.

Work for someone else? Nawwwww... I feel I had no other choice!

Blair Kirchner Thanks for your answer Charlie. I agree, there is nothing better than being your own boss. You make the rules that way :) Blair Kirchner 9 months ago

When I started telling people I didn't know about my business. I was already an entrepreneur at that point, but it didn't set in until then. And looks like a fun book you guys published. I will check it out.
