What are the best ways to promote your Mobile App/Site after it's done?

A checklist would be great (and creative ideas too) - 1) Get friends to rate highly and comment 2) invite Influencers/Press to try it) 3)...

Some things I've had (or have seen) success with:

1) Leverage social media. Universally this should include Facebook and Twitter. Depending on the app/site, it may also make sense to check out Pinterest, though that's still a maturing platform.

2) Mailchimp. Get a list together, send out updates, don't be bashful, but don't be spammy, especially if your friends are on the list.

3) Like-gated promotions: Put together a like-gated or follow-gated contest (i.e., you have to "Like" the page in order to enter).

4) Beta competition: If the next step is a beta launch, put together a contest for the beta users to A) help drive additional feedback/usage, and B) create content.

5) Make some cheap videos. Reference the "Daily Shave" guys and their recent success.

6) Get it in front of key influencers in your market, particularly bloggers with big followings or media reps.

Hi David,

PR is also a great way to get the word out about your app. I work at an online PR services site called PressKing (www.pressking.com) but there are dozens to choose from that make it really easy to send out press releases to relevant journalists and bloggers around the world. Hope this helps!

I am certainly not an expert in this area, but one thing to do is leverage your social media platforms. Depending on the nature of the app, contests always seem to work well in getting the word out and engaging users. Maybe run a contest where entries answer 3 questions relevant to the app, first 10 entries win a month free using the app if that applies or they get the app free forever or something along those lines. Or run a core group field test where the users get to try the app for 30 days and then rate its effectiveness. If they like it the word begins to spread. Just a few thoughts.
