What is Google's strategy with Google Fiber? Is it strictly for profit or do they have another strategy in mind?

Asked 10 months ago, Edited 1 month ago by in Information Technology

If you haven't heard about it, Google Fiber is Google's new high-speed internet project they're rolling out as a trial in the Kansas City area. Some of the early specs are pretty impressive. It's supposedly 100 times faster than average broadband Internet. Their TV service has uncompressed HD programming and an 8-channel simultaneous DVR. The remote is a Nexus 7 tablet. For more info, check out: http://fiber.google.com/about/

At any rate, I've been wondering what Google's strategy is. Originally, I remember hearing it was a high-priced experiment to learn about fiber installation and rollout. Others have speculated it's a ploy to improve the Internet and subsequently improve Google's products. Or is it simply Google trying to become an ISP/television provider?

Either way, it's very intriguing and hopefully they expand outside of Kansas City very soon.

I guess I'll answer my own question. :)

My guess would be somewhere near the ISP/television provider area. Google has the potential to blow existing providers out of the water in a variety of areas including: internet speed, HD picture quality, DVR quality, on demand options, and more.

The battle for tablet/mobile supremacy is already underway, but seems like the TV landscape has a huge potential for improvement. As discussed in a previous question I asked, TV may be the next big platform: http://www.mosaichub.com/open_forum/question/in-recent-years-consumers-have-shifted-from-deskto

And I'm sure Google will also learn a lot from doing this. And there's no doubt they do a lot of interesting R&D (e.g. driverless cars). Should be interesting to see where they go from here.

Catrina Sharp This is interesting that I haven't heard about this (and it was 3 months ago!). I wonder how it is going - I will have to look into it. I did hear about the Nexus 7 tablet from the Google Developers Conference. It will be interesting to see if you are right about TV being the next big platform. Catrina Sharp 6 months ago
